In today’s job market, some say the chances of landing a job are lower than ever before, but it’s not impossible: For students with guidance from the UTEP Career Center located inside Union West, their dream job is just around the corner.
The Career Center offers guidance to students who want to learn how to create or enhance their resumes and prepare for interviews, and also provides business attire for students attending interviews.
Craig Thompson, associate director of the UTEP Career Center, has been preparing students for the workforce since 1988.
“All of the jobs and materials listed here were organized in an actual binder,” Thompson said. “All of the jobs on campus were written on little 3-by-5-inch cards that were posted in the hallways.”
Advances in technology have made finding a job a snap, but there are still some old-fashioned ways to prepare for an interview.
“You’ve received a job description, you’ve researched the company, you know what your skills match and what their skills match, so you need to know what the interview is about,” Thompson said.
For students and recent graduates, going into an interview can be a nerve-wracking experience, so Thompson advises staying confident even if you’re nervous.
“Be confident and make sure you look the other person in the eye. You don’t have to stare at them, just make eye contact,” Thompson said.
Thompson also advises students to dress professionally, even if they normally wouldn’t, and to be prepared to answer any questions.
The UTEP Career Center is here to help students achieve their career aspirations.
The Career Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit utep.edu/student-affairs/careers.
