The Kiidumhene of Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Area, who also doubles as the Benkumuhene of Gomoa Davenin, Nana Barima Owusu I, has recently expressed concern over the open participation of some chiefs in partisan politics.
According to him, this act is an insult to the institution of chiefdom and will cause chaos.
In his words, “Chiefs are fathers to their subjects and must remain neutral. By engaging in partisan politics through their words and actions, they are already showing they have chosen a side and will make it difficult for others to approach them. Some of your subjects will belong to the NDC or the NPP. As a father, how do you demonstrate your support for one side?”
He added that one of the emir’s key roles is to adjudicate disputes and when doing so he must be seen as a neutral emir and not a politically biased one.
“No matter how impartial you are in your judgement, if you are politically biased you will not be taken seriously. Some mayors are very friendly towards some candidates but mean towards others. This keeps me up at night,” he added.
Nana Barima Owusu, I, expressed these concerns at the celebration of Egwantodo festival in Gomoa Davenin, Gomoa East District in the Central Region.
“I, Nana Barima Owusu, further advised the youths to desist from acts of violence before, during and after the 2024 elections.
“Young people must realise that they are the future leaders. Politicians give you allowances to create mayhem after they have relocated your families abroad and once the election is over, they will never bother you again after using you to do their dirty work.”
He finally advised Ghanaians to safeguard the peace we enjoy and not jeopardise it with this year’s elections.
The festival drew people from far and near to give thanks to the gods and their ancestors for their protection.
