iOS 18.1 will be released soon and will add the first set of Apple Intelligence features. I recently discovered that one of the best new AI features in iOS 18.1, Notification Summary, is a smart and useful addition to Apple Card and related spending or income tracking apps. Here’s how:
Overview of notifications added in iOS 18.1
Notification Summary is an optional Apple Intelligence feature in iOS 18.1. When turned on, notifications incorporate AI to provide more useful content.
For example, for email notifications, you will see a summary of the entire email content, not just a snippet of the first few lines.
I especially love using notification summaries in the Messages and Mail apps. Apple Intelligence gives me the important information I need more than unabridged notifications.
However, I discovered another very useful use case. That’s an overview of Apple Card spending.
Apple Intelligence automatically totals your expenses and income
One of the benefits of using summaries is that you can summarize the content of multiple notifications at once. So if you have a stack of notifications from the same app, Apple Intelligence will synthesize the content of all the individual notifications into one short blurb.
This is important. For Wallet app notifications, Apple Intelligence automatically aggregates recent spending totals from all notifications in your stack.
For example, my wife and I just went to Walt Disney World, and we bought some Apple Cards there. Apple Intelligence took the amounts from my three wallet notifications and summed them up in the notification summary.
Therefore, three separate notifications for expenditures of $13.83, $7.44, and $13.62 are now one convenient summary.
Multiple purchases at Walt Disney World and more, totaling $34.89.
The good news is that this isn’t limited to Apple Card in iOS 18.1.
All apps that send notifications with an amount will be totaled in the notification summary. This includes other apps that track your spending and apps like Venmo that show you the payments you receive.
It’s not hard to manually add up these numbers yourself, but it’s much more convenient to have Apple Intelligence do it for you. It also helps you stay more aware of your recent expenses and income on a given day.
Are you excited about this new AI feature? What can you use it for? Let us know in the comments.
