AMES – The Cyclone football team came into Sunday’s game in good form, defeating the University of Northern Iowa 6-1 on Sunday after a 1-1 draw with Drake University on Thursday.
Iowa State played its best game so far this season, and head coach Matt Fanone celebrated his 100th career win with Sunday’s victory.
“It’s important to win games,” Fanone said, “and it’s important for the ladies to play well, so that’s all I care about.”
The Cyclones led the game with three goals in the first period: Freshman Seulgi Lee scored her first goal for the Cyclones off an assist from redshirt junior Magdalena Keck, and soon after, senior Hannah Shaw scored her first goal of the season after coming off the bench due to injury two seasons ago.
“(Shaw) has worked so hard to get on the field and I’m so happy for her. She’s amazing,” Fanone said.
Iowa State and Northern Iowa University battled it out in the final minutes of the first period, with junior Isabella Agrusso scoring a goal with an assist from senior Lauren McConnell.
Soon after, Northern Iowa scored against a tough Iowa State defense, keeping Iowa State on edge. But the Cyclones were unfazed by the goal, and Shaw scored again in the second period with an assist from Ella Zimmerman.
“To score two goals and help the team win is something I’ve always wanted,” Shaw said.
The Cyclones finished strong as Morgan Farmaniak scored her third goal of the season and Zimmerman scored her first goal of the year to seal the win. They’ll look to continue their success on the road against Memphis on Sunday at 8 p.m., which will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
