JD Vance was widely mocked online after he posed for a photo op during a supermarket trip where he lamented the high price of eggs.
The Republican vice presidential nominee stopped by a supermarket in Reading, Pennsylvania, with her sons over the weekend to explain how “Kamala Harris’ policies” are affecting grocery prices, claiming that a dozen eggs are now $4.
What’s the problem? When footage of the visit was released, viewers were quick to slam Vance after noticing that the price tag on a dozen eggs behind him was actually $2.99.
“When you look at the prices here, they’re too expensive. They’re too expensive because of Kamala Harris’ policies,” he told shoppers.
His son interrupted him, pointing to the carton of eggs behind him. “Let’s talk about eggs,” Vance continued. “Because these guys eat, like, 14 eggs every morning,” the Ohio senator said, pointing to his sons.
“When Kamala Harris took office, eggs were less than $1.50 a dozen. Now they’re about $4 a dozen. Thanks to Kamala Harris’ inflationary policies, Pennsylvania is experiencing the worst food price increases in the nation, again because she voted for the inflation-bombing bill.”
While some eggs can cost over $4, the average price in August was $3.20 per dozen, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Prices have risen significantly in January 2023, to an average of $4.82.
Television producer and film director Morgan J. Freeman posted on social media platform X: “Even their own photos show that JD Vance is lying about the price of eggs.”
Another wrote: “Hey, next time you lie on camera, take the price tag off. Also, you’re holding a carton of 24 eggs. I know you’re not good at math but that’s 2 dozen.”
“After all that they did they forgot to remove the price tags from the eggs before filming him lying about the price,” another said.
Governor Harris has previously pledged to impose a federal ban on food and grocery price gouging to stop big corporations from “unfairly” exploiting consumers and making “excessive profits.”
The vice president, who has so far not provided details about his economic plans, is expected to announce new economic policies this week, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has said his plan to lower food prices is to impose tariffs on food imports.
“We bring a lot of agricultural products into the country,” he said at a Michigan town hall last week. “We have to be a little bit more like other countries. We’re not going to bring in as much. We’re going to let our farmers work.”
But experts warn that imposing tariffs could backfire and ultimately lead to higher prices, Axios reports.
Vance was particularly prone to gaffes on the campaign trail where food was involved.
He acknowledged that the Trump campaign had faltered after an awkward visit to a doughnut shop in Valdosta, Georgia, in August.
As a throng of reporters looked on, Vance struggled to make small talk over baked goods with a store worker who clearly didn’t want to be on camera — a harrowing moment that went viral. “I felt so bad for that woman,” Vance said later.
And in Philadelphia, an Ohio senator was trying to make a joke when he ordered a Philly cheesesteak at the famous Pat’s King of Steaks, but ended up being accused of committing “crimes against humanity.”
“I don’t like Swiss cheese either, but everyone says it’s insulting,” Vance told employees at the restaurant that is said to be the birthplace of the cheesesteak and is famous for using only American, provolone and Cheese Whiz in its cheesesteaks. “Why do you guys hate Swiss cheese so much?” Vance asked.
The salesperson awkwardly replied, “It’s not that I don’t like it, I just don’t use it. I normally use Cheez Whiz.”
