Jack Black has canceled the latest Tenacious D tour and said he has put the duo’s “all future creative plans” on hold after his partner Kyle Gass made a controversial onstage “joke” about the weekend’s assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.
Actor, comedian and singer Black said today: “I was shocked by what was said at Sunday’s show. I do not in any way condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much consideration, I do not feel it is appropriate for Tenacious D to continue to tour, and all future creative plans have been put on hold. I thank my fans for their support and understanding.”
During a show in Sydney on Sunday, Gass was asked by his fellow bandmates what he wished for, to which he replied, “Just make sure I don’t miss Trump next time.” The quip drew criticism and led one Australian senator to call for the comedy rock band to be expelled from the country.
The pair were due to complete another week of shows in Australia before heading to New Zealand. The show’s local promoters initially said tonight’s show had been postponed, but Black later issued the above statement about cancelling the entire tour.
Tenacious D were also due to begin a US tour in October, kicking off with a sold-out show in Ohio with Senator J.D. Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee. That tour also now appears to have been cancelled.
“Information regarding remaining tour dates and refunds will be provided at a later date,” the source said.
Black has been a vocal supporter of the Democratic Party. On June 7, at a major fundraiser in downtown Los Angeles, he was dressed in Stars and Stripes overalls and gave a vocal endorsement of the sitting president. “If the president wins in November, I’m sure he’ll praise me in his victory speech for all the sacrifices I’ve made to get here,” he told a well-heeled crowd at the Peacock Theatre. “At a time when democracy is at stake, Jack Black answers the call. You’re welcome, Mr. President.”
