Jack Black is confident about Tenacious D’s comeback.
The 54-year-old actor spoke about the band’s future after they canceled their tour following backlash after band member Kyle Gass made controversial comments about the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.
“You need a break. Everybody needs a break,” Black told Variety at the premiere of his new film, “Borderlands,” on Tuesday night.
“And we’ll be back,” he added.
Black confirmed he has been in contact with Gass, 64, after criticizing his bandmate for comments he made about the former president.
“Yeah, we’re friends, that won’t change,” Black said.
“Sometimes these things take time… and then when it feels right I’ll come back,” the Tropic Thunder star added.
On July 14, during a Tenacious D performance in Australia, the day after Trump, 78, was shot in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Black presented Gass with a birthday cake and told him to make a wish.
“Next time, don’t miss Trump,” Gass said.
After his comments caused widespread backlash, Gass was released from his talent agency Green Talent and Black announced that Tenacious D was canceling the remainder of their Spicy Meatballs Tour.
Both band members spoke out about the controversy in separate statements.
Black told The Washington Post that he was “taken off guard” by Gass’s comments at the concert, and that he “never condones hate speech or encourages political violence in any form.”
Gass apologized, saying his comments were “highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake.”
“I do not condone violence of any kind or form towards anyone,” he wrote on Instagram. “What happened was tragic and I deeply regret my poor judgment. I am deeply sorry to those I have let down and I sincerely regret any pain I have caused.”
Gass later deleted the apology post.
On July 13, President Trump was shot by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks while on a roof about 130 yards from the stage where he was speaking.
Crooks was shot dead by the Secret Service.
President Trump addressed the shooting in an exclusive interview with The Washington Post on July 14, calling it a “very surreal experience.”
Black has been an outspoken critic of President Trump: In June, the “Jumanji” star spoke at a star-studded fundraiser for the 81-year-old president’s reelection campaign in Los Angeles before he dropped out of the race.
The event, which was attended by former President Barack Obama, Jimmy Kimmel, George Clooney and Julia Roberts, raised more than $30 million.
Black wore “smart American flag overalls” and told a number of jokes during his speech.
