BOSTON — Members of alternative band Jane’s Addiction were spotted fighting onstage during a show in Boston on Friday night.
The fight was captured on video
The incident happened during the band’s performance at the Leeder Bank Pavilion. Video shows lead singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro yelling at each other mid-song, then charging at each other, before Farrell punches Navarro. Another man then steps in between the two to break up the brawl. The concert was then ended early.
“I think it’s a return to the classic rock attitude mentality of being a bad boy. That stuff seemed to have disappeared and this really brings back memories for people,” one fan said.
“You don’t see anything like this at any other concert, it’s pretty amazing to be honest,” said Eoin O’Donnell, who was amazed by the video.
Video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, leading some fans to speculate that the band might be breaking up.
Wife blames frustration
“Perry’s frustration grew with each passing night as she felt the stage volume was so loud that she was drowning out the band,” Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, wrote on Instagram on Saturday morning.
She said her husband suffered from ringing in his ears and a sore throat, and that “by the end of the song he was no longer singing, he was just screaming to be heard.” Afterwards, she said, her husband “broke down in tears.”
Jane’s Addiction, known for songs like “Jane Says” and “Been Caught Steal,” is on its first tour in 15 years. Its next show, scheduled for Sept. 15 at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheatre in Bridgeport, Connecticut, was canceled via social media on Saturday.
“We sincerely apologize to our fans for the incident that occurred last night. As a result, we are cancelling tomorrow night’s show in Bridgeport,” Jane’s Addiction said on Facebook.
The band said refunds for Sunday’s show would be issued by ticket sellers.
“If you want to buy tickets to a Jane’s Addiction concert, you’re basically taking a chance,” says Rich Wade, a Boston native.
