Jennifer Lopez and her husband Ben Affleck have officially separated, according to Los Angeles Superior Court records.
Lopez filed for annulment of their two-year marriage in Los Angeles on Tuesday, coinciding with the anniversary of the couple’s planned wedding in Riceboro, Georgia, in 2022 after eloping in Las Vegas a month ago.
The breakup comes after reports the couple had separated, with Lopez cancelling her summer tour to spend time with her family and putting her Beverly Hills home on the market.
CNN has reached out to representatives for Lopez and Affleck for comment.
Their divorce marks the latest twist in a love story between the two superstars that has dominated the public’s attention for decades.
Lopez and Affleck’s marriage comes more than 20 years after they first met on the set of the comedy “Gigi,” where they played hard-working criminals and developed a real-life friendship that eventually blossomed into a relationship.
Years later, they both married other people and had families.
However, the Bennifer team reconciled in 2021 and rejoiced for Bennifer 2.0.
They both seemed very happy.
“One of the things that I really value in every aspect of my life now is that I was treated in a way that reflected that,” Affleck told The Wall Street Journal in December 2021. “My life now reflects not just who I want to be, but who I truly feel like I am — not perfect, but someone who tries hard and who really values being honest and authentic and accountable. It’s hard to say who benefited more without getting into the details of the gossip.”
The couple became engaged in November 2002 when Affleck proposed with a custom 6.1-carat pink diamond ring by Harry Winston, and Affleck also appeared as Lopez’s love interest in the music video for her 2002 single “Jenny from the Block,” a storyline that explored the paparazzi’s treatment of their relationship.
The couple were scheduled to marry in September 2003, but postponed the wedding due to “undue media attention” surrounding it.
At the time, a source told CNN the couple was “taking a break.”
They officially separated in January 2004.
So when the couple went public with their relationship on Instagram in July 2021, just months after Lopez ended her engagement to baseball legend Alex Rodriguez, it seemed like a fairy tale.
“I feel so lucky and happy and proud to be with him,” Lopez told People magazine about reuniting with Affleck just weeks before he proposed for a second time in April 2022. “It’s a beautiful love story, being given a second chance.”
In 2024, Lopez released the self-produced album “This Is Me… Now” and the documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” which told the story of her decades-long search for self-love.
In the film, Affleck says he learned to “compromise” about Lopez’s desire to be more public about her private life.
The pair have been spotted together on separate coasts more recently, and in late July, Lopez celebrated her birthday with a Bridgerton-themed party, though Affleck was not in attendance.
Lopez has two children with ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Affleck has three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
