Derrick Henry has always been a man’s man when he’s on the field, but the star running back took his game to a more prolific level in his first season with the Baltimore Ravens. Following Week 7, Henry led the NFL in every meaningful rushing statistic, including rushing yards, yards per rush, and rushing touchdowns. In fact, Henry is currently on pace to: What will be the NFL record? He has 2,210 rushing yards on the season.
This strong start to the 2024 season raised a lot of questions among the teams that didn’t call up Henry, especially the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has a clear need for a running back, and Henry reportedly had interest in the club this offseason. However, such a union never materialized, with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones previously stating: insolvency It’s the crux of why Henry isn’t running around AT&T Stadium.
On Tuesday, after Henry rushed for 169 yards on “Monday Night Football,” Jones appeared on 105.3 The Fan for a weekly spot and further discussed his decision not to pursue Henry. Jones is off to a great start to the year in Baltimore, but there have been questions about whether the Cowboys would have gotten the same results if they had signed him.
“We’re not playing good football at all right now, and it goes beyond whether we have Derrick Henry or not,” Jones said Tuesday. “Derrick Henry is having a career year. I don’t know if he’s going to have that career year in our situation, but that’s something we’ll have to really look at, because if he’s going to be in our If he hadn’t had those carries numbers, he probably wouldn’t have had as much of an impact if he had been a running back. ”
Henry has led the league with 134 rushing attempts this season, and the Cowboys have 133 rushing attempts as a team.
Jones went on to add that his Cowboys and Ravens offenses also likely changed his success rate.
“He’s a player that complements the type of offense (the Ravens) really well,” he continued. “We have not carried out any such attacks.”
Jones reiterated that the decision not to let Henry become a free agent is largely due to financial factors.
“Derrick Henry wasn’t the right fit, primarily in terms of cap management,” he said. “In anticipation of the players that we were going to sign in the next few weeks or the players that we are going to sign in the future.”
This season, the Cowboys are averaging 77.2 rushing yards per game, the worst in the NFL.
