FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The standoff between the New York Jets and Haason Reddick’s contract took an ugly turn on Monday, when the Pro Bowl edge rusher formally requested a trade but general manager Joe Douglas publicly rejected it.
Redick was unhappy with his contract, missed 21 days of training camp and was fined $50,000 per day, an unusual situation since Redick was acquired in a trade just 4 1/2 months ago.
“We have communicated to Haasson that he will not be traded, that we expect him to be here with his teammates and that he will continue to face fines under the CBA if he does not report to work,” general manager Joe Douglas said in a statement. “Since trade negotiations in March, we have been clear, forthright and consistent in our position. As we prepare for the regular season, we remain focused on the players who are here with us.”

In late March, the Jets traded a conditional 2026 third-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles to acquire the two-time Pro Bowler. Sources said the Jets expected Redick to play out under his current contract, but his absence from the entire offseason, including mandatory minicamp, created problems.
The Jets won’t negotiate with players unless they’re in camp, sources said, and Redick has refused to report unless his contract is upgraded.
Redick is due to receive a non-guaranteed base salary of $14.25 million in the final year of the three-year, $45 million contract he signed with the Eagles as a free agent in 2022. He felt he overplayed his contract and wanted to be paid on par with the best edge rushers, which is the main reason the Eagles decided to sell him in the offseason despite his quality production.
Redick has recorded 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons, good for fourth in the league in that span.
After losing sack leader Bryce Huff to the Eagles in free agency, the Jets jumped in to trade for Redick, one of the few big names left in the 2024 lineup. Curiously, the Jets didn’t finalize Redick’s contract status at the time of the trade, but sources said they offered him an extension. It’s unclear how much they offered, but it likely fell far short of the guarantees he was looking for.
The Jets then told Redick they wanted to reevaluate his contract later in the season or after it ends, the person said, adding that the team was surprised when Redick did not show up to workouts.
Neither Reddick nor his agent have commented.
Redick was fined $1.05 million for missing 21 days of training camp as required by the collective bargaining agreement — a fine that cannot be waived by rule — and was also assessed about $300,000 in discretionary fines under the terms of the bargaining agreement.
Back in the spring, Redick lost out on $100,000 for missing minicamp and also forfeited a $250,000 training bonus for sitting out the offseason.
The Jets have big plans for Redick, who turns 30 on Sept. 20. He’s expected to be the starting defensive end in their front four, replacing John Franklin Myers, who was traded to the Denver Broncos. Michael Clemons and Will McDonald have split time in training camp.
