Now celebrating 110 years of trade with Japan, John Smedley has launched his debut lifestyle collection to mark the occasion. The collection was designed in collaboration with the brand’s Japanese retail partners. The 10-piece unisex collection is expected to include Japanese-made tailoring, jackets and coats, and will mark the first time the company’s manufacturing will take place outside its Derbyshire headquarters.
Commenting on the importance of Japan to the brand, Deputy Managing Director Jess Maguire Dudley said: For decades, we have worked with our colleagues in Japan to understand consumers and tailor our designs and products to the market. She continued, “This new collection reflects this process, with pieces made in Japan but tailored for consumers around the world.Furthermore, historically, the Japanese market has always been important; Major milestones such as creating a silk, merino and cotton blend long john for the Emperor of Japan in the 1900s are key to our archive.”
Tailoring our products to this market, Japanese customers are younger and more fashion-oriented than their European and North American counterparts, while at the same time appreciating the combination of tradition and innovation.
