Janasena chief Pawan Kalyan has repeatedly appealed to MPs and leaders to be more in tune with the people and not indulge in feudal politics. But scandals do occur from time to time. Recently, JSP Kakinada MP Pantham Nanaji was caught in the crossfire.
Earlier in the day, Nanaji had created a disturbance on the grounds of Rangaraya Medical College, ultimately leading to the AP Government Doctors’ Association threatening a sudden strike.
As the story goes, the MLA and his entourage got into an altercation with Dr Umamaheswara Rao, Vice-Chairman Sports, Medical College, over the use of the basketball court. Apparently, when the MLA’s entourage was planning to use the court for their own purposes, the doctor prevented them and insisted on taking permission from senior officials. This escalated into an altercation, during which the local MLA rushed to the spot.
A video going viral on social media shows the MLA and his men hurling abuse at Dr Umamaheswara Rao after a fight broke out over a basketball court. The MLA hurled abuse at Dr Umama using language unbecoming of a Parliament.
Soon after the video was released, the AP Government Doctors Association issued an ultimatum that it would call for flash protests if the state legislator did not immediately apologise.
MP Nanaji realised the seriousness of the situation and apologised to Dr Uma and the medical community and vowed not to repeat such an act in the future.
This is not a precedent that a ruling party MLA should follow at a time when the NDA government is committed to friendly and people-centric governance. Fortunately, in this case, the issue was resolved quickly with the MLA apologising for his behaviour. However, Kutami MLA must show more common sense.
