K Kavita was released from prison after five months.
K. Kavita, who has been in jail since March on charges of corruption and money laundering in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case, was released on Tuesday evening, hours after the Supreme Court granted conditional bail to the Telangana politician.
BRS workers and supporters beat drums and burst crackers as she came out of the jail. Kavita’s brother and current BRS president KT Rama Rao was also present.
“We are fighters. We will fight legally and politically. They have only made the BRS and KCR team invincible,” the militant leader said in his first comments since coming out of prison.
Pictures show the leader looking emotional after being reunited with his family.
“I was imprisoned only for political reasons. I have done nothing wrong. I will fight and prove my innocence,” Kavita declared, fighting back tears.
“I am Telangana’s daughter and KCR’s daughter. I can do no wrong. I am stubborn and a good person,” she added.
“I will repay the attention of those who put me and my family through this ordeal. Our time will come,” Kavita told reporters at the BRS party office.
“It was especially difficult as a mother being away from my family and my children for five and a half months,” she said.
The Supreme Court today said that the 46-year-old Indian National Congress (BRS) leader will no longer be detained in custody as both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have completed their investigations against her.
“The appellant (Kavita) is ordered to be released on bail with immediate effect on a bail bond of Rs 1 million in each case,” the court said, allowing her appeal against the Delhi High Court’s July 1 verdict which had denied her bail in two cases.
The two central agencies came under heavy criticism over the “impartiality” of the investigation, with the Supreme Court saying it “regrets this development”.
“The prosecution must be impartial and cannot pick and choose anyone. What is this impartiality? The witness is the person who is himself an accuser,” the court said, adding: “Tomorrow you indict someone of your choice and leave as accused someone of your choice? A very fair and reasonable discretion!”
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Kavita, argued that the investigation against her has been completed and the chargesheet and complaint have already been filed.
He also noted that the Supreme Court had on August 9 granted bail to Manish Sisodia, a co-accused in both cases and a senior AAP leader.
Police arrested Kavita from her Banjara Hills home in Hyderabad on March 15 and the CBI arrested her from Tihar Jail on April 11.
