Paramount Pictures released the trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” on Tuesday, offering a new look at Sonic (Ben Schwartz)’s showdown with new nemesis Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves.
Check out the trailer above.
First appearing in the 2001 video game Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow is the creation of Professor Gerald Robotnik, grandfather of Sonic’s nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Possessing incredible speed and the power of chaos control to manipulate space and time, Shadow is initially portrayed as Sonic’s enemy but ultimately becomes an ally in the Sega video games on which the film series is based.
Story details for the third Sonic movie, set to hit theaters on December 20, have been kept under wraps until now. But the 2020 original saw the eponymous anthropomorphic hedgehog team up with small-town sheriff Tom (James Marsden) to evade capture by the government and Dr. Robotnik, a mad scientist intent on using his powers for evil. In the 2022 sequel, Sonic teams up with his friend Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessy) to stop Knuckles (Idris Elba) and Robotnik from obtaining the Chaos Emeralds they need to further their evil plans.
The first two films in the Sonic series grossed over $319 million worldwide. All three films were directed by Jeff Fowler, who worked from screenplays by Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington, based on stories by Casey and Miller.
Besides Reeves, Krysten Ritter is the third film’s most notable new addition to the Sonic ensemble; her role has not yet been revealed. Other returning cast members include Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Tika Sumpter and Elba. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Asher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno are producers, with executive producers including Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, Yukio Sugino, Fowler, Tommy Gormley and Tim Miller.
