The Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago this week as an awards ceremony, with four hosts to host the event – one for each night of the convention, a source told CNN.
Hosts are Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn, Mindy Kaling and Ana Navarro.
Each person will kick off the evening with a self-introduction and then return throughout the night to host the event and introduce new segments. Each night of the convention will feature a different theme: Monday “Serving the People,” Tuesday “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” Wednesday “Fighting for Freedom” and Thursday “Serving Our Future.”
Washington, who heads his own political nonprofit Influence Change, will host the convention’s big night on Thursday, when Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept the Democratic presidential nomination. Harris officially became the Democratic presidential nominee on August 6 after receiving a majority of the votes in online voting.
Goldwyn will host Monday night, Navarro Tuesday night and Kaling Wednesday night.
All four are vocal supporters of the Democratic Party: Scandal star Washington opened the third day of the 2020 convention, Scandal co-star Goldwyn recently attended an event with then-presidential candidate Joe Biden, while Kaling cooked South Indian food alongside Harris in a 2020 video.
Navarro, a co-host on “The View,” is a Republican but has leaned more toward the Democrats in recent years and has said he supports Harris.
Joe Biden is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on Monday evening, according to The Washington Post, with first lady Jill Biden also scheduled to speak the same evening.
“Our convention is an opportunity to tell the story of our party to the American people — not just the story of what we’ve accomplished under the Biden-Harris Administration, but how Candidate Harris-Waltz plans to build on our historic record and chart a new course for the future,” said convention chair Mignon Moore. “The story here is simple, and it will resonate with Americans across the country: Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are fighting for the American people and the future of America. Donald Trump is only fighting for himself.”
According to The Washington Post, the speaker list also includes former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former first lady Michelle Obama.
