The Telegraph’s Tim Roby said A Real Pain was “at once painfully insightful and laugh-out-loud funny”, but no mean feat, and described it as a classic indie film with a wry sense of humour. He added that it felt like a nice throwback to comedy. .

Robbie said that Culkin is “obviously in the spotlight” for his work on Real Pain, but that Eisenberg as director is a “smart pairing of opposites” between Culkin and the Succession star. He said that he deserves praise for creating this.

One attendee said, “I loved Real Pain…it’s funny, thought-provoking, and moving. Kieron Culkin gives a great performance. You can see it in his eyes. The emotions are truly heartbreaking. There’s another movie I’d like to see again…”

A Real Pain first had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where Searchlight Pictures picked it up for distribution and several critics were able to see and review it.
Deadline’s Damon Wise said at the time that Culkin gives a “career-high performance” in the film, while also saying it was “proof that Eisenberg is ready to transcend the actor-director label.” Ta.
Owen Gleiberman of Variety had similar sentiments, calling the film a “delight and a revelation” and calling Eisenberg “a great choice for the likes of Greta Gerwig, Ben Affleck, and Bradley Cooper. He wrote that he will join the elite category of “a rare actor who has turned out to be.”
Similarly, David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter wrote of Eisenberg’s approach to directing: “With ‘A Real Pain,’ he excels in balancing wry wit and piercing grandeur in a film full of impeccable judgment and emotion with no wasted emotion. It shows skill.”
A Real Pain will premiere in theaters on January 10, 2025.
