Convenience store chain Kwik Trip plans to install DC fast chargers at “numerous” stores in the Midwest.
Kwik Trip DC Fast Charger
Kwik Trip announced yesterday that it is launching its Kwik Charge program in Wisconsin, installing DC fast chargers with both CCS and NACS connectors.
Kwik Trip’s EV chargers are funded by National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program funds and must be NEVI compliant.
That means they must be located within one driving mile of an alternative fuel corridor. An EV charging station must include at least four ports with connectors that can simultaneously charge four EVs at 150 kilowatts (kW) each, and the total power capacity of the station must be at least 600 kW.
NEVI-funded charging stations must be publicly accessible 24 hours a day and include amenities such as restrooms, food and shelter, and shelter.
Kwik Trip is building an app using software from Driivz to help EV drivers find Kwik Charge chargers and check charger availability and pricing.
The first two EV charging stations are expected to be completed by the end of October in Ashland and West Salem, Wisconsin.
Based in Wisconsin, Kwik Trip is a family-owned company with more than 880 stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, South Dakota and Illinois.
John McHugh, Kwik Trip’s vice president of external relations, told the Madison, Wis., Cap Times in May that the company does not intend to install EV chargers at all of its Wisconsin stores. he said:
Is this the main direction of our company? No, it’s not. Statistically, I don’t think it’s a big factor. But for guests who want it, that’s the real reason we pursued it.

Electrek’s view
Perhaps one of the reasons Kwik Trip pursued charging is that guests want to charge. The main reason for installing EV charging stations in Wisconsin, which the company somewhat cumbersomely didn’t mention in its announcement, is $8.1 million from NEVI funds in the state to install chargers at 24 locations. This is because they received.
However, the Cap Times notes that “when it comes to Senate Bill 792, the bill that would authorize DOT to release (NEVI) funds, Kwik Trip will spend more time lobbying than any other group in the second half of 2023. He spent his time on activities.”
So it appears the EV chargers at the Wisconsin store were a bit more “important” than McHugh claimed.
