The area’s only girls high school hockey team will open its season Nov. 2 and 3 in Davenport. The game is free and donations will go to The Gray Matters Collective.
DAVENPORT, Iowa — The puck is about to be dropped on the latest season of Lady Blues hockey.
The Lady Blues are the only girls high school hockey team in the area. The season’s home opener will be played on November 2nd and 3rd at River’s Edge in Davenport. Saturday’s game begins at 6 p.m., and Sunday’s game begins at noon.
The game is free to attend, but donations will be accepted throughout the weekend. There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and gift baskets. All proceeds will be split between Lady Blues and The Gray Matters Collective, a local mental health nonprofit.
The Gray Matters Collective began as a mental health campaign at Augustana University. Today, it is a nonprofit organization dedicated to mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Several of the Lady Blues are also members of TGMC.
This year’s team includes 13 active players ranging from second year middle school students to third year high school students. They come from all over the Quad-City area and as far away as Cedar Rapids.
This is the Lady Blues’ third season. The team will begin the season away with a tournament in Des Moines on October 26th and 27th.
News 8 profiled the 2023 team. Before the Lady Blues were formed, many of the players grew up traveling hundreds of miles to play for other teams. At the time of our profile, several young athletes were talking about paving the way for future generations of female hockey players.
“We certainly feel like we have to create something that will last for a while so that girls who love this sport as much as we do will come after us,” forward CeCe Spector said. spoke.
