PARIS (AP) — Lauren Jackson capped a glittering international career with her fifth Olympic medal.
The 43-year-old Australian star won three silver and two bronze medals as the Opals beat Belgium 85-81 on Sunday, tying her for second-most all-time by an Olympic women’s basketball player. Only Diana Taurasi has more medals than her with six.
“Five in a row, five points!” Jackson yelled as he walked through the post-game press conference room.
Jackson said that although he didn’t play many games at this Olympics, he’ll be able to remember everything better than if he had.
“I was on the sidelines,” Jackson said of the Paris Games, “I was cheering on the girls and it was definitely one of my favorite Games.”
Jackson was able to share the experience with her two sons, who also competed in the Olympics, and although she will no longer compete, she says she will stay involved with the Opals and provide whatever support is needed behind the scenes.
Just making it to this Olympics is an achievement in itself after retiring following multiple knee surgeries in 2016. She began playing in Australia’s domestic league a few years ago and eventually led the team to a bronze medal at the 2022 World Cup.
“I think Lauren’s name is synonymous with basketball success and I think she brings a lot of experience to our team, whether she’s on the court or off,” said Edji Magbegor, who had 30 points and 13 rebounds in the win over Belgium. “I think she’ll be a great addition to our team and it’s a real honor to play alongside her and have this experience together.”
“Even before going into the Olympics, I knew what Lauren had accomplished in basketball and what she’s accomplished in her career. She’s the best and she wins wherever she goes, so it’s awesome to win a bronze medal with her.”
Alana Smith said Jackson’s wealth of experience provided valuable wisdom to the team.
“She’s been like an emotional support to me. I remember her giving me a hug while I was sitting on the bench against France. I think we should have won by six points, but we stuck together and persevered,” Smith said. “When she speaks, we listen and I’m really grateful for the opportunity to play alongside someone like Lauren.”
