Wetlands Tour
The Friends of Arcata Wetlands will be hosting free tours of the Arcata Wetlands and Wildlife Refuge on Saturday.
Participants will meet leader Sharon Levy in the lobby of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center on South G Street at 2 p.m. for a 90-minute walk learning about the history of the wetlands, their ecology and how they help purify polluted water. Wetlands Work Day
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will host a Wiggie Swamp Volunteer Day from 9-11 a.m. Saturday.
Volunteers will help restore a portion of the Bay Trail by creating bird-friendly natural habitat and removing invasive plants and trash. The trail portion is located behind Bayshore Mall and volunteers will meet in the parking lot just behind Walmart. The Audubon Society will provide tools, gloves and packaged snacks. Tour the Wetlands
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will host a free guided field trip at Arcata Wetlands and Wildlife Refuge from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
Grab your binoculars and meet your tour leader, Mark Colwell, at the end of South I Street (Crop Lake) in Arcata to enjoy the spectacular views of Humboldt Bay, easy trails and a wide variety of birds. September marks the beginning of many migratory bird journeys, so be sure to come and enjoy observing bird behavior and any food fights you may encounter.
Cornerstone Events
The California Masonic Grand Lodge and Humboldt Masonic Lodge No. 79 will hold a cornerstone ceremony for Eureka High School’s new Jay Willard Gymnasium at noon Saturday.

Pancakes are here
The Trinidad Lions Club will host a pancake breakfast at Trinidad School from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday.
The menu includes pancakes, ham or sausage and eggs, or biscuits, gravy and eggs, plus a drink, for $8 for adults and $4 for children.
Books will also be available for sale at the event, with prices ranging from 25 cents to $1. Proceeds will benefit youth, community and school activities.
Scotia Band
The Scotia Band will return to Eureka Christ Episcopal Church on Sunday at 4 p.m. Due to illness, the concert originally scheduled for Aug. 25 was canceled but has been rescheduled for Sunday.
The band will perform a program featuring music by popular American bandleaders and composers, including Morton Gould, Claude T. Smith, and Henry Fillmore. Selections from “West Side Story” (Bernstein), Henry Fillmore’s “Americans We,” Disney films, and “Young People’s Guide to John Williams” will provide music the whole family can enjoy. Concert band pieces will also be included in the program, including an arrangement of J.S. Bach’s “If Thou Be Near.”
The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome and will be used to support future concerts. The church is located at 1428 H Street in Eureka. Off-street parking is available at 14th and G Streets. Wheelchair accessible ramps are available on 15th Avenue between G and H Streets.
This summer, the Christ Church Concert Committee will be hosting a quilt raffle to raise funds for upcoming concerts. The colorful quilts were stitched and quilted by the Open Heart Quilters. Tickets can be purchased prior to the concert. The raffle will take place on the Sunday after the Scotia Band concert.
Audubon Tours
The Redwood Region Audubon Society and tour leaders Tom Lyle, Claire Gorec and Gary Friedrichsen will be hosting a birding, geology and botany tour of the Humboldt County Coastal Lagoon starting at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Participants will meet near the south departure ramp on Big Lagoon Park Road. The event will begin with a brief explanation of the evolution of coastal lagoons. From there, participants will travel by caravan through dry, stony and freshwater lagoons to observe the waterfowl and shorebirds that inhabit these freshwater systems.
Participants should bring warm clothing, a lunch, and water. The walk will involve some undulating terrain, but will not exceed a few hundred yards. This tour runs rain or shine, but will be canceled if it is too windy. Tours are limited to 20 participants. Email gary@jacobycreek.net to register.

Dance Party
The dance, featuring live music and a “great floor,” will be held Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road in Eureka. Admission is $9.
