NAIROBI – Vice President Ligathy Gachagua has broken her silence on plans by some Kenya Kwanza Party leaders to file an impeachment motion against her.
Why are lawmakers planning to impeach Ligaty Gachagua?
Gachagua said in an interview on a local language radio station in the Mount Kenya region on Sunday, August 4, that he was aware of the impeachment plans.
Gachagua happy with new cabinet appointments, says Mt Kenya well represented: “Hatujapoteza”
According to Gachagua, his firm stance on the unity of the Mt Kenya region, including his struggle for rights in government, was what got him into trouble.
“I have not seen the impeachment motion, but I have heard rumors that it is being pursued because of my efforts to secure a government position for the people and address the issues facing avocado farmers,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua also stressed the need for the state to prioritize pressing issues over political machinations aimed at advancing personal interests.
“We have a lot of issues we need to address as a country. Impeachment is not one of them. But if members of Congress see it as appropriate to impeach me in the midst of all these economic issues, I’m totally fine with that,” he said.
How Mutahi Kahiga challenged those planning to impeach Gachagua
Ligaty Gachagua denounced the threats and revealed that one of the police officers was shot to intimidate him.
In a related development, Nyeri State Governor Mutahi Kahiga has made provocative remarks to lawmakers planning to impeach the Deputy President.
Kahiga said Gachagua’s supporters would deal with it if lawmakers implemented their plan, but local politics would change.
The mayor further denied the allegations against his second-in-command as false and frivolous.
The Nyeri state governor, a close aide to Mr Gachagua, said the vice president’s position was guided by listening to voices on the ground.
