Justin Dedic’s path to the National Football League wasn’t a straight line. The former USC Trojans offensive lineman spent six years in college, playing multiple positions on offense. He ultimately finished his Trojan career at the center spot in front of Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams on USC coach Lincoln Riley’s offensive line. Dedic appeared in 47 games during his Trojan career, starting 33 of them.
Dedić waited his turn for three seasons before becoming a full-time contributor at USC and four seasons before becoming a full-time starter. Dedić made a big impact not only as a player but also as a leader when he got the chance. Dedic was a three-time All-Pac-12 honorable mention and was also named a third-team All-American by Pro Football Focus.
“Justin is one of the hardest-working guys I’ve ever been around. He’s a helpful player at center and guard, lives in the weight room, and does whatever he’s asked to do for the team. Justin is a true throwback,” said former USC Trojan teammate Trevor Trout.
At 6-2 and 300 pounds, Dedic lacks the ideal size required for any position on the offensive line at the NFL level. Dedic went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft in April for two main reasons: his natural size and his status as a 24-year-old rookie. However, he was fortunate enough to sign an undrafted free agent contract with the Los Angeles Rams, earning him a chance to join the 53-man roster.
Dedic made it past the first round of cuts, but ultimately ended up being released by the Rams during the final cuts. On the bright side, he was brought back to the team as a member of the practice squad the next day. Earning a chance to make the team was already a big goal, but joining the practice squad was a no-brainer for Dedić.
The Los Angeles Rams are a famous team that finished the season making the playoffs and nearly winning their postseason matchups. Being a part of any team in the NFL is a huge accomplishment, but joining a franchise like the Rams is a notable accomplishment. Dedić made it, but little did he know what was in store. After suffering several injuries on the offensive line, Dedić found himself spurred into action.
Last weekend against the Raiders, the 24-year-old undrafted rookie made his first NFL start at the guard position in just his sixth game of the season. what happened to him? wonderful. Expectations may be low for an undersized rookie guard, but there’s a reason the Rams had faith in him. Although he is young, he has played a lot of soccer. He’s smart, durable, and tough. These traits helped Dedic excel in pass production, allowing no sacks or pressures with 24 true dropbacks.
Dedic made his second start against the Vikings on Thursday Night Football and shined once again. Dedic was physical on offense, solid in pass protection, and was not called for a penalty. He has performed far above any realistic expectations that may have been placed on him thus far. The Rams may have found a true diamond in the rough in the most unconventional package possible.
“Justin is a prime example of consistency combined with hard work on tape and doing things the right way, and we at TEST believe that despite concerns about his size, his growth is… We expected him to continue his journey in the NFL. He worked extremely hard during his tenure with us and at USC, once he showed his talent and dedication to his craft as an OL. I knew teams would take notice if I got a chance to show off,” said Joe Rozell, TEST’s scouting director and East-West Shrine Bowl scout.
Dedić is still writing his story and this may just be the beginning, but he’s already defied expectations and that’s great.
