SEATTLE — Manny Machado hit a two-run homer to become San Diego’s career home run leader, Fernando Tatis Jr. added a three-run homer and the Padres rallied to a 7-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.
Machado’s 164th home run in a Padres uniform was a liner to center field off George Kirby in the top of the sixth inning to give San Diego a 5-2 lead. Machado watched from home plate as the ball left the bat at approximately 109 mph.
Machado’s homer was his 26th of the season, tying him with Padres leader Nate Colbert for the lead. Machado has 339 career homers with Baltimore, the Dodgers and San Diego.
While Machado’s homer set the record, Tatis’ homer gave San Diego the lead, going the other way for a 3-2 lead with his first extra-base hit since June 20. Since June 20, Tatis has been on the injured list for an extended period with a stress reaction in his right femur.
Machado hit a two-run single in the seventh inning that grazed pitcher Austin Boss’ back and bounced toward center field.
Yu Darvish pitched five innings in his second start since returning to the Padres. Darvish (5-3) gave up solo homers to Cal Lowry and Luke Lowry but got out of a tight third inning when Seattle put its first two runners on base. Darvish struck out Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena, who were sandwiched between Lawry’s flyout.
Darvish allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked zero.
Lawrie’s home run was his 30th of the season, making him just the 12th catcher to reach 30 home runs in multiple seasons. JP Crawford hit a one-run single in the seventh inning, but Jason Adam got out of the jam by getting Rodriguez into a double play with the bases loaded.
Kirby (11-11) allowed just two extra-base hits in his first 12 starts this season but has given up five runs and 11 home runs in his past seven starts.
New shortstop
Xander Bogaerts made his first start of the season at shortstop for the Padres. It’s a familiar position for Bogaerts, who has started more than 1,300 games at shortstop, and it provides some short-term clarity while the Padres await the return of starting shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, who has not played since Aug. 18 because of right shoulder inflammation.
That’s right. The first two outs in the bottom of the first were a pop out and a grounder, both of which went to Bogaerts.
