Minister of Information, Fatima Awuni
Minister of Information, Dr. Fatima Abubakar, has said former President John Mahama cannot own even one of the regional hospitals that were started and completed during his tenure.
The Minister’s assertion came after a member of the Public Relations team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Grace Ayens Danquah, during a panel discussion on Metro TV monitored by GhanaWeb, claimed that Mr John Mahama, who will be the leader of the NDC in the December 7 general elections, built a hospital in Abetifi in the East.
However, the minister, who was his co-star on the show, was quick to deny the allegations, stressing that Mr Mahama cannot take credit for running them as he had no part in them.
“Take my word for it, former President Mahama has not even started and completed a single community hospital. There is a list of nine hospitals (legacy projects), there is a list of five hospitals (legacy projects), there is the Euroget project, I know Abetifi Hospital is one of the projects that goes along with Kumau Hospital and Fomena Hospital project. I know for a fact that this is a legacy project,” he said.
“What I am saying is that these legacy projects are not projects that were started by former President Mahama. I am saying they were not started by former President Mahama.”
The President Akufo-Addo/Bawumia led government is currently building several hospitals across the country under the Agenda 111 initiative.
To date, construction of 86 district hospitals, two regional psychiatric hospitals and a Western Regional Hospital is underway and in various stages of completion.
The Agenda 111 Hospitals project will provide 101 standard 100-bed district hospitals with accommodation for doctors and nurses in areas without district hospitals, and six new district hospitals in each of the six new regions.
Others include the renovation of Effia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region, the construction of one new regional hospital in the Western Region, and two psychiatric hospitals in two of the country’s three regions, the Central and the Northern. The entire package is estimated to cost $1.75 billion.
