Matira MP Eric Wamumbi has advertised 17 job openings in his constituency, a day after Parliament passed the resolution to impeach Vice President Ligati Gachagua.
In a Facebook post, Wamumbi urged young people to apply, saying, “17 posts in Matira constituency are currently vacant and advertisements for applications will be posted soon.”
Mr Wamumbi, who belongs to President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance Party (UDA), decided to impeach Mr Gachagua on 11 grounds, including gross misconduct, including illegal acquisition of wealth of Ksh5.2 billion and economic crimes. He was one of 281 councilors who voted in favor.
The timing of the MP’s vacancy announcement is interesting, especially since he had a public falling out with Mr Gachagua, who had campaigned vigorously for the Matira seat.

In July 2024, Wamumbi acknowledged the rift between himself and the Democratic Party, saying, “It’s true, there is a rift between the Vice President and me.The rift is not about a closed bar in Karatina Town; The town was dead for four months.”
He also accused Gachagua of being dishonest about why the pair broke up. Around that time, the Democratic Progressive Party claimed that some Interior Ministry officials were obstructing the fight against illegal beer in the region.
In a speech at Chiamariga market on July 7, Gachagua boldly accused MP Matira of betrayal. The vice president claimed that he felt that he was wronged, especially since he was behind the lawmaker’s parliamentary victory.
“I can’t believe that the person I supported to win the Matira parliamentary seat is now against me,” Gachagua said, adding that he is “working harder” to reopen 400 bars in the area. He accused Wamumbi of lying when he said he had discussed it with “higher powers.”
Around the time the rift between the two leaders became public, a fake circular in his name began to circulate on social media, forcing him to issue a statement denying the impeachment charges against Gachagua.
The big picture: Mr. Gachagua’s impeachment is likely to have ripple effects beyond his office. With his fate all but sealed, Gachagua’s only hope lies in the Senate and the courts.
The Senate is scheduled to hear the impeachment bill against the Democratic Party through the plenary session next Wednesday and Thursday.
The decision came after Senate Minority Leader Edwin Sifuna opposed a motion to have the matter heard by an 11-member committee.
Given this development, Gachagua is expected to challenge the possibility of impeachment in court through his legal team.
