Showtime’s “Dexter” returned to San Diego Comic-Con on Friday night with special guest Michael C. Hall.
It wouldn’t be a Dexter Con without Dexter, and the night was attended by both Hall and Patrick Gibson, the latter of whom plays a younger version of Hall’s character in the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin. Original Sin is currently in production and will see Hall join as the series’ narrator, i.e. the voice of Dexter, when it premieres in December.
“I’m pretty excited,” said Hall, who also serves as an EP on the new series, after receiving a standing ovation at Ballroom 20. “I’m having flashbacks to the first time I came to Comic-Con. We were in this hall. That was… 75 years ago? It’s amazing I’m still around. I can’t wait to see this show. On some level, I know what’s going to happen. I’ve spent so much time with these characters, so to come back and fill the void in my imagination with this Technicolor show… it’s amazing.”
Time is fast approaching for Adult Dexter, after it was revealed that production on Dexter: Resurrection will begin in January.
Set in 1991 Miami, the 10-episode Original Sin follows Dexter (Gibson), a student honing his killing skills with the help and support of his adoptive father, Harry (Christian Slater). When his bloodlust grows too strong to ignore any longer, Dexter finds solace and understanding in his father. His only true friend, Harry, teaches Dexter the rules to find and kill those who deserve to die – all while avoiding capture by the police. This presents an especially difficult challenge for the young Dexter as he begins his forensic internship with the Miami Police Department.
Friday’s Comic-Con panel was hosted by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who also stars in the first film. Joining her onstage were Slater, Gibson, and EPs Scott Reynolds and Clyde Phillips. Other cast members included James Martinez, Christina Milian, Reno Wilson, Alex Shimizu, and Patrick Dempsey.
Surprisingly, Hall just met Gibson on Friday in San Diego, though the two have been together before over Zoom. “We’re about the same height,” Hall joked. “He still has time to grow.”
Phillips promised the prequel, “Expect even better than what you’ve seen before. It’s just amazing to see these characters in their younger years, and I promise the storylines will be surprising, moving and satisfying.”
“It’s a wide-open avenue,” Reynolds added of the prequel. “It’s wonderful to be able to tell the story of a kid who thinks he’s worthless and a father who says he’s not.”
Production on Original Sin is currently underway in Miami and Los Angeles, and it was recently confirmed by Deadline that the cast will include Joe Pantoliano as Mad Dog, Brittany Allen as Dexter’s biological mother Laura Moser, Isaac Gonzalez Rossi as Santos Jimenez, Aaron Jennings as Clark Sanders, Raquel Justice as Sofia, Jasper Lewis as Dexter’s adoptive mother and Harry’s wife Doris Morgan, Carlo Mendez as Hector Estrada, Isaac Gonzalez Rossi as Gio, and Roberto Sanchez as Tony Ferrer.

Dexter returned in 2021 with the limited series Dexter: New Blood, in which Hall starred opposite his grown son Harrison, played by Jack Alcott.
Dexter premiered in the fall of 2006 and ran for eight seasons, ranking as Showtime’s No. 1 original program. Dexter: New Blood, a limited series set 10 years after the end of the original, premiered in 2021 and became the network’s most-watched and most-streamed original program in history.
