Miley Cyrus has been sued for copyright infringement after she was accused of copying Bruno Mars in the making of her Grammy Award-winning hit “Flowers.”
In documents obtained by TMZ, Tempo Music Investments claims that Cyrus’ 2023 smash single shares “many musical similarities” with Mars’ 2012 ballad, “When I Was Your Man.”
The investment platform, which claims to own part of the copyright to Mars’ song, alleges that the chorus, harmonies, melody, chord progression and lyrics of “Flowers” were “intentionally” plagiarized from the “24K Magic” hitmaker’s song.
However, Mars is not named as a plaintiff in the lawsuit documents.
Representatives for Mars, 38, and Cyrus, 31, did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
Earlier this year, the “Malibu” songstress won her first Grammy Award when “Flowers” won Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, beating out Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish.
“This award is amazing, but I truly hope that this award doesn’t change anything, because yesterday my life was beautiful,” Cyrus said in her Record of the Year acceptance speech.
“Not everyone in the world can win a Grammy, but everyone in this world is amazing, so don’t think it’s important.”
The two-time Grammy Award winner is rumored to have written the song about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, to whom she was married from 2018 to 2020.
Cyrus, who has been active in the music industry for decades, later questioned why it took her so long to receive recognition from the Recording Academy.
“No offense, but I’ve been doing this for 20 years and this is the first time I’ve been taken seriously at the Grammys?,” she said in a June interview with W magazine.
“I have a hard time understanding what the measurement is there, because if you want to talk about statistics and numbers, where the hell was I? If you want to talk about cultural impact, where the hell was I?”
However, the pop star clarified, “This isn’t about arrogance. I’m proud of myself.”
Cyrus began her career in the industry at the age of 12, starring in Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana from 2006 to 2011.
The singer then went on to top the charts with hits like “Party in the USA” and “Wrecking Ball.”
