On Wednesday, September 25, NBCU Academy partnered with Columbia College Chicago to host the AI Student Innovation Summit at the Conaway Center, 1104 South Wabash. The initiative is led by Peg Murphy, associate professor in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship and former university professor. Dean of the Department of Communication, which became part of the Faculty of Communication and Culture in August.
The event was attended by Columbia University undergraduate students, including alumni, graduate students, and educators. The AI Summit provided attendees with the opportunity to network with executives and recruiters, and was attended by more than 100 guests, along with complimentary food, giveaways, and pre-show swag.
“I’m graduating in December, so I’m just trying to talk to people in the industry and gather experience in whatever I like,” said Illinois State University student Kamia Carter. “I write manuscripts all the time, so I wanted to know the proper way to use them ethically in a newsroom.”
Prior to the live broadcast, in-person attendees had the opportunity to meet and talk with NBCUniversal executives and members of HelloHive, an online recruiting and recruitment platform, and have their resumes viewed by recruiters. The summit began with an introduction from NBC News Business and Data Correspondent Brian Chang, followed by Yvette Miley, NBCU News Group EVP (Moderator) of DEI, NBC 5 and Telemundo Chicago and Columbia, Inc. The first panel focused on “AI and the Future of Work” and was moderated by NBC News Business Correspondent Brian Chang. The panel discussion highlighted the impact of AI in the workplace, from limited AI in tasks like calendar management to generative AI in content creation. Ethical considerations such as misinformation about AI tools in the workplace and disinformation surrounding AI as an evolving technology. The panel emphasized the importance of understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI in the workplace, including the use of AI tools for inclusivity and knowledge management.
In “Using AI as a Tool,” panel experts provided knowledge on creating AI-driven requests, including live application demonstrations.
“I always encourage people to think about it, try some options, and then evaluate,” said Liam Andrew, leader of the American Journalism Project Technology. “I think AI will continue to be integrated into our research and production sites.”
Panelists discussed specific AI tools, such as Otter.ai for transcription and Google Pinpoint for document analysis, and showcased their usefulness in newsrooms. We also addressed challenges such as language translation, situational awareness, and ethical guidelines for implementing AI.
The final panel, “The Impact of AI on Journalism,” focused on the role of AI in newsrooms and emphasized the importance of human skills in journalism, such as critical thinking and storytelling.

Panelists concluded the summit by discussing the impact of AI through responsible use and transparency.
The AI Generation Student Innovation Summit provided practical guides for attendees to discover career opportunities and apply AI to everyday personal tasks.
