Two of the leading brands in streetwear, NEIGHBORHOOD and Subware, have joined forces to bring you back to the early days of the scene.
NEIGHBORHOOD’s 30th anniversary debut collaboration leverages the recently revived Subware, one of New York’s most influential ’90s underground streetwear brands.
Although criminally ignored today, Subware was a pioneering label, one of the first to collaborate with artists like KAWS and Futura, long before high-end brands jumped at the opportunity to commercialize graffiti and hip-hop culture. It was one of the brands. This was a time before streetwear was even called streetwear.
Founded in 1993 by graffiti legend Stash, Subware helped shape the early intersection of art and fashion that we’re familiar with today. After a hiatus in the late 2000s, Stash revived the brand.
Meanwhile, NEIGHBORHOOD, which was started by Shinsuke Takizawa in 1994, remains one of the OGs of the Japanese fashion world. Part of the legendary Harajuku movement, NEIGHBORHOOD fuses Takizawa’s love of motorcycle culture with classic American style, from the leather jackets to the denim to the logo, and is a nod to, you guessed it, American graffiti culture. He has established a position in street fashion by creating profound and inspired designs.
It seems safe to say that this is a legendary linkup.
The upcoming collaboration between these two OG brands celebrates their shared ’90s heritage. Blending nostalgia with a modern touch, the collection includes varsity jackets, graphic T-shirts, sweatshirts and accessories featuring Subwear’s iconic logo. My personal favorite is the 90’s subway inspired incense holder.
The entire 20-item drop, including some children’s items, will be available starting October 26th. A friendly reminder of the graffiti days of yore when it was a completely underground movement, Subware’s resurgence is a welcome trip down memory lane. lane.
