Apple is reportedly planning to launch two different versions of its fourth-generation AirPods this fall. One model is expected to be more affordable while still offering basic features. The more expensive model is rumored to have active noise cancellation and will replace the current third-generation model, according to Bloomberg.
One of the reasons for the decision to drop the AirPods 3 from the lineup is the charging case: The AirPods 3 charging case features a Lightning port, while Apple’s lineup has been moving to USB-C since the second-generation AirPods Pro.
Aside from the case upgrade, the AirPods are also expected to get new firmware, new head gesture controls, and improved noise isolation. Spatial Audio features may all be shared between both models, and both may be able to charge the Apple Watch via the AirPods case.
The new AirPods are expected to be unveiled at an Apple event next month alongside new versions of the iPhone and iPad.
It’s unclear exactly what Apple has in store for the iPhone 16, but there are already plenty of rumors floating around about the device. Specifically, rumors suggest the camera will be updated with two lenses stacked vertically and a flash next to it. It’s also expected to have increased RAM and storage capacity, and an A18 chip. Both Pro models are expected to feature tetraprism lenses. Apple may also launch a new “Ultra” branded device, rumored to be a successor to the iPhone Pro Max.
