According to multiple rumors, the iPhone 16 models will feature an all-new button designed to make it easier to take photos when holding the device in landscape orientation.
Apple is calling this button internally the “Capture button,” and it’s set to be one of the most advanced buttons ever introduced, with support for multiple gestures and the ability to respond to pressure. Rumors suggest that this button will be able to perform the following functions:
Press the button lightly to autofocus while taking pictures or videos. Press harder to take a photo. Swipe left or right on the button to zoom in or out. There may also be gestures to switch between photo and video modes, just like how the iPhone camera app lets you take videos with just a press and swipe.
The ability to autofocus with a simple press of a button will be familiar to DSLR camera owners, as this is often how autofocus is done when using higher-end cameras.
Apple plans to place the button on the right side of the iPhone, the space where the mmWave antenna is located on iPhones sold in the U.S. To make room, the mmWave antenna will be moved to the left side of the device.
The Capture button has been featured in CAD renderings and dummy models of four iPhone devices, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested this week that the Capture button may only be available on the Pro models.
The capture button allows Apple to prompt users to take images and videos in landscape orientation, which is easier to view on the Vision Pro headset.
In addition to the capture button, the iPhone 16 models will have slightly larger displays, the new A18 chip that will support Apple Intelligence, and 8GB of RAM needed to power Apple’s AI models across the board. For a full rundown of what to expect, check out our iPhone 16 roundup.
