If you’ve ever heard actress Nicola Coughlan’s hearty belly laugh, you’ve undoubtedly had the joy. The Bridgerton star’s infectious laughter stimulates every dopamine receptor left in my brain as she charmingly replies in a voice memo. And now, she’s continuing her momentum of inspiring fans with the launch of her smiling Kate Spade fall campaign.
Alongside co-stars Taraji P. Henson and Marsai Martin, Coughlan is sporting the new Spade Flower Jacquard handbag, which she says reminds her of the pink Kate Spade bag she bought herself as an end-of-filming gift for Bridgerton season one. The campaign also marks the launch of Kate Spade’s Global Fund for Women’s Mental Health, a very personal cause for Coughlan, who has previously opened up about her struggles with depression. Below, Coughlan talks to NYLON about finding joy (which may include a slightly over-the-top drug-themed song), the habits she’s picked up on the set, and her message of encouragement for those in need.
This campaign feels like a full circle moment for you – the gift you gave yourself at the end of Bridgerton season 1 was a Kate Spade bag. What else inspired you to work with the brand?
I always like to buy myself something as a memento. It reminds me of all the hard work I’ve put in and it’s fun to look back on. When I finished the first season of Bridgerton, I bought this gorgeous pink quilted Kate Spade bag with a red heart on the front. Kate Spade bags are truly It bags. It’s been an iconic brand for as long as I can remember and everyone has their own Kate Spade story. It’s so much fun and it’s great to be a part of this campaign that focuses on women’s mental health.
How would your character, Penelope Featherington, style this collection in Bridgerton?
This collection is beautiful and very Bridgerton-esque in a way. The floral jacquard bag is a classic pattern. It has florals, it’s very Bridgerton-esque, but it feels fresh and modern. I think it’s a perfect fit for Penelope’s new married woman wardrobe, because she’s a Bridgerton now. She’ll wear the bold patterns with the quirkiness that is her forte.
What outfit makes you feel most confident?
I always think that good accessories can enhance an outfit. Even a bad outfit can look better if you have a good bag. A great handbag is like a little security blanket; it makes you feel organized. Everything that matters is in your bag. If you don’t know what to do, you can just dig through your bag and grab your lipstick.
How do you prioritise your mental health?
For me, prioritizing my mental health is paramount. I try to focus on moments of joy. I’m currently shooting a movie, and I started filming the day after the Bridgerton press tour ended, so it hasn’t stopped. Weekends are very important to me. Spending time with loved ones and intentionally creating happy memories is what makes life worth living.
What advice would you give to women seeking help for mental health issues?
My advice to women seeking help for mental health issues is to always ask for help. It’s OK, it’s natural, to ask for help. There is always someone who will be there for you. There is always someone who will love you. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Almost everyone will experience mental health issues at some point in their life, so never feel embarrassed or afraid to speak up. It’s crucial that you do.
Who has given you the best advice since you began your acting career? What did they say?
It’s really inspiring to me to see actors on set being so kind and gentle with everyone. I think it’s really important to treat everyone with the same level of respect. Whether it’s the person setting up the lights for the day or your A-list co-star, you should treat everyone the same. It’s important to have a good attitude and show respect and kindness.
You recently released a drag queen inspired charity song in support of LGBTQ+ charities during Pride Month. If you could dress any drag queen for your collection, who would you choose and why?
This time, I chose Symone and Gigi Goode because their style is playful and glamorous. Their whimsy suits this collection, and Kate Spade in general, so well. I think they can look really stylish and really great.
