Nigel McGuinness has reflected on the possibility of finishing his career as a wrestler on his own terms after injury forced him to retire from in-ring competition in 2011. McGuinness, who has transitioned into a commentator role, had a stint with WWE before joining AEW in 2023.
During a candid chat with Chris Van Vliet on the show “Insight,” McGuinness discussed the idea of ending his wrestling career under more favorable circumstances. Reflecting on the unexpectedness of his final match at a small venue in West Virginia, McGuinness expressed his gratitude to the independent promoters who helped him organize his retirement tour and acknowledged that wrestling endings are often unpredictable.
When asked about a possible match against Bryan Danielson at Wembley Stadium as the only condition for his return, McGuinness acknowledged the importance of their history, but emphasized his commitment to his role as a commentator and his reluctance to return to full-time wrestling. While acknowledging the talent and influence of veterans like Christian Cage and Adam Copeland, McGuinness emphasized his belief in passing on knowledge to the next generation through his work as a commentator, and expressed no desire to pursue a career in wrestling other than a possible match against Danielson. McGuinness made it clear that his interest in returning to the ring was solely driven by the prospect of facing Danielson, citing their shared history and storylines as motivating factors.
Nigel McGuinness was a successful wrestler whose career was unfortunately cut short due to injuries. After beginning his career on the independent circuit, he became known for his technical wrestling skills and captivating in-ring performances. McGuinness is best known for his career with ROH, during which he won the ROH Pure Championship and the ROH World Championship, making him one of the brand’s most memorable legends. He later moved to TNA, where he had some memorable feuds and matches before retiring from in-ring competition in 2011. Despite his cut short career, McGuinness made a lasting impact on the wrestling industry and continues to contribute as a commentator and mentor in the wrestling world.
