Production on the film Peaky Blinders officially began in the UK today. Check out the first look photo of star Cillian Murphy as a gray-haired Tommy Shelby above, and scroll down for more details. Murphy will be joined by Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, and Tim Roth, Deadline can exclusively reveal. Netflix greenlit the BAFTA-winning series into a feature film in June.
Oscar winner Murphy returns to his iconic role as Tommy Shelby, leader of the eponymous Birmingham gangster family. Details of other roles are played close to the vest. The six-season BBC drama series ended in April 2022, but Tommy’s story didn’t end there. Plot details for the film have been kept secret other than the fact that the story takes place during World War II, which the show’s creator Steven Knight revealed to Deadline at the end of the series. He explains more below.
The sequel to the story will be written by Knight and directed by Peaky alum Tom Harper. Knight serves as producer along with Patrick Holland, Murphy and Guy Healy. Executive producers include Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Caryn Mandaback and Andrew Warren. The film will be produced in partnership with BBC Films.
Knight said: “We’re thrilled to see cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. This country is at war, so of course our Peaky Blinders・The same goes for blinders.”
Harper added: “There is great anticipation and excitement among our outstanding cast and crew. We are grateful to our fans for getting us this far, and we believe this next chapter will bring great things. ”
