Dr. Eileen Duhart Long had a 31-year career with NASA.
BREVARD COUNTY • KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA – Dr. Eileen Duhart Long is the first woman and first minority to hold the position of chief medical officer at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and the first African-American woman to hold a senior leadership position at the center.
These honors are just two of the many firsts she has achieved during her 31-year career at NASA.
As she broke down barriers in her own life, she advocated for greater opportunities for others.
She partnered with Florida Agricultural and Technical University to help create the Kennedy Space Flight and Life Sciences Training Program, a program that encourages more women and minority college students to explore careers in science. She also inspired and mentored her colleagues, taking a keen interest in their paths at NASA.
“One of Eileen Long’s most admirable qualities was her inclusiveness toward women in the workplace,” said Patricia Bell, Kennedy employee advocacy counselor. “She was a pioneering advocate for women.”
Long helped coordinate women’s education forums that focused on health, mental health and other topics of interest to women. Long passed away on August 4, 2020, at the age of 69.
