Prabal Gurung found optimism and hope in his Spring 2025 collection, which celebrated Holi and female leadership with graceful silhouettes, vibrant colors and a touch of tomboyishness.
The Nepalese designer continued his East-meets-West design code by centering the theme of hope during the Holi festival. As he was developing ideas for the collection in Nepal, news of Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign broke, spurring his vision for a hopeful and celebratory spring lineup.
“It was a huge success for me because I love my daughter and I’ve dressed her so many times before,” the designer said. “I felt a new sense of excitement and purpose, and it really aligned with what I was doing originally with the Holi theme, so I leaned into it.”
Gurung stuck to a whimsical, dreamy aesthetic with airy slip dresses, see-through blouses and effortless draping, while party-inspired styles, like a colorful fringe mini dress and a metallic floral dress with a bubble skirt, gave off a festive vibe.
From subtle details like coconut-shaped brown sequins to more standout pieces like a white brocade minidress embellished with crystal palm trees, the designer subtly paid homage to Harris’ campaign, particularly the vice president’s much-talked-about coconut meme.
“I had a lot of fun making this collection because I felt like I could make it with ease,” he says, “All these prints are splattered Holi prints. Kamala means lotus flower and all these flowers are like exploded lotuses.”
A sense of sophistication was conveyed through pieces that placed the emphasis on structure over detail, with silk chiffon blouses paired with structured trousers or skirts, and an array of slip dresses.
Gurung’s spring lineup demonstrates his flair for design and his ability to inject newness into established codes.
