South Sudanese President Salva Kiir is due to depart for Kigali, Rwanda, to attend the inauguration of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame.
Last month, President Kagame won general elections in the East African country.
President Kiir was seen off at Juba airport by First Vice President Riek Machar, cabinet ministers and senior government officials.
On Sunday, President Kiir, who is also chairman of the East African Community (EAC), will join other world leaders in attending the inauguration of President Kagame for his fourth term in office.
President Kiir’s spokesperson Lily Adiou Martin said the president is expected to attend such an important event in the region. The two leaders are also expected to hold bilateral meetings and discuss peace and stability in the region, she said.
Lilly noted that the visit highlights the importance of regional cooperation in addressing common challenges and advancing common goals of the East African Community.
President Paul Kagame is set to be sworn in on Sunday in a ceremony that is expected to be a grand celebration of his enduring leadership.
The event, to be held at Amahoro Stadium, is expected to attract more than 40,000 spectators, including over 23 heads of state from across the African continent.
The inauguration will feature a spectacular military parade showcasing Rwanda’s well-trained military.
In addition to military displays, traditional dance performances will highlight Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage and add a lively and festive atmosphere to the occasion.
President Kagame, 66, has been in power in Rwanda since 2000 and has led the country through a period of remarkable change.
