I loved just about everything about the season 4 finale of The Boys , save for a 90-second unskippable Amazon Prime Video ad in the middle, and now it’s time to turn our attention to season 5.
There’s a lot of news to look forward to about this season, and not just because, as we all know, it exists. The question isn’t whether the show will return for season 5, but whether it will be just for season 5 or continue beyond that. Eric Kripke initially hinted that it would, but then changed his mind at the last minute, so season 5 will be the end.
Kripke talks about how things will eventually escalate to the highest level, with Homelander essentially taking control of the entire country.
“I think the Season 4 finale really signals what we’ve been planning for five years, because there’s no way the show would go on for another season after what happened in that finale. For us, it’s the end of our version of the show.”
Homelander has gotten everything he wanted from the beginning, which was to remake America on his own terms, to his own whims, and the Boys have hit rock bottom, with most of them captured and us worrying about their future.
I always think of it like, through five seasons, we’re at that point in a way. It’s like the end of the second act of the movie, where everybody’s really hit rock bottom, everybody’s confronted their own personal demons, and now they really need to come together in the fifth season to save the world.”
The final episode also brought some good news, with Homelander learning that Soldier Boy is in fact alive and has been placed in stasis, meaning the fan-favorite character will be returning in Season 5. There are also reports that Supernatural brother Jared Padalecki will be reunited with Kripke in a role for Season 5.
Antony Starr believes season 5 is the perfect time for the show and “Homelander” to finally come to a close.
“I think everybody wants to end on a good note and I don’t think it could get any worse. I’ve been on shows that have done this and it was really awful. It was awful to do something like that in a previous season. It just leaves a bad impression and you have to live with that. I really want it to end on a good note and I think everybody deserves that.”
The only bad news here is the timing. There was about a year and a half to two years between the final two seasons of The Boys before that. There’s no strike, so unless something disastrous happens, this one might be shortened from two years. But you never know what’s going to happen. Production and filming starts in November, which is just a few months from now. We’re excited to see the end result.
