The Daily Signal first report — Anti-Israel protesters breached the first layer of fencing in the Secret Service perimeter around the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday night, and Daily Signal reporters Tim Kennedy and Tony Kinnett were on the scene reporting the event live.
Reporters captured footage of anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian protesters cutting parts of the border fence.
Protesters lined the fence and began banging on it.
Eventually, the protesters broke through the perimeter, but Kennedy said only a single fence separated them from the United Center, where the convention was being held.
Police arrived on the scene in riot gear and forced protesters and media personnel off the road and across the perimeter.
Police tried to clear protesters from the streets and reinstall Secret Service barricades.
Protesters began removing the barricades they had destroyed, apparently to prevent police from re-erecting them.
Chicago police attempted to penetrate the Secret Service perimeter, then marched to the park where a crowd of Antifa and anti-Israel protesters were still gathering.
Late Monday evening, Chicago Police released a statement saying officers quickly contained the situation, that the perimeter fence had been breached but not the inner perimeter, and that there was no threat to protected individuals. They did not say whether any arrests had been made.
President Joe Biden is scheduled to address the party’s convention on Monday night.
This is breaking news and will be updated.
