New details have emerged about the PS5 Pro, which is set to be unveiled later this month. Recent leaks suggest that the PS5 Pro will be slightly larger than the PS5 Slim and will feature three black stripes on the faceplate. Sony appears to have very subtly acknowledged this design choice as part of its celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation. As you can see from the photo below, the 30th anniversary poster includes faint images of various PlayStation hardware and peripherals. A larger image further down the page clearly shows that it includes a previously leaked photo of the PS5 Pro with the three stripes down the middle.
The inclusion of the PS5 Pro in the commemorative artwork suggests that Sony is on the verge of officially unveiling the device, with a November launch date as previously reported.
This also proves that the recent leaks were true, raising some slightly worrying implications about the cost of the device.
In fact, recent rumors suggest that the PS5 Pro may launch without a built-in disc drive.
Sony is likely to go the PS5 Slim route, where a disc drive can be purchased separately and plugged into the hardware.
This keeps costs down for fans of the digital medium, but requires millions of PlayStation fans who prefer physical games to pay extra.
We’ll likely learn more about the PS5 Pro when Sony unveils it at its PlayStation State of Play event later this month, which could take place as early as next week.
Still, previous reports have suggested that the PS5 Pro will be much more capable of processing Unreal Engine 5 games (compared to the regular PS5), so things are certainly looking up for PlayStation fans.
According to Sony’s documentation, the PS5 Pro will run about 45% faster than the current model, and the larger GPU will reportedly use faster system memory to improve ray tracing by up to three times.
The PS5 Pro’s CPU is the same as the current model, but it will be equipped with a mode that can improve performance by about 10%.
“Trinity will have a mode targeting a CPU frequency of 3.85GHz,” The Verge’s report reads. “Sony will give developers the ability to choose between a 3.5GHz ‘standard mode’ or a 3.85GHz ‘high CPU frequency mode.'”
Finally, developers will have access to more system memory on the PS5 Pro, which should make it easier to increase resolutions and boost frame rates.
Games with significant improvements will reportedly ship with a PS5 Pro Enhanced tag, making it easier for customers to identify titles that take advantage of the console’s superior architecture.
