ISLAMABAD: After much consideration, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to officially become a member of the Judiciary Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
A statement from the party’s political committee confirmed this decision, adding that the PTI had agreed to nominate a member from the opposition ranks to represent the Japanese Communist Party party.
The committee said it was briefed that the two opposition party members play an important role in policy-making and that it functions as a long-term body.
The PTI Political Committee unanimously approved the recommendation, which will now be sent to the core committee for approval.
However, the final approval rests with PTI founder Imran Khan, who will also give the go-ahead to opposition representatives nominated to the committee, the statement added.
The recruitment of Supreme Court justices is carried out by the Judiciary Commission, headed by the Chief Justice.
The committee includes the four most senior judges, the Federal Minister of Law, the Attorney General, representatives of the National Assembly and the Senate, and a representative of the Bar Council with at least 15 years of experience.
The commission will determine the constitutional number of judges and judges in the Supreme Court and High Courts.
The Japanese Communist Party will be re-formed following the passage of the Article 26 amendment to the Constitution, which was recently forced through by the ruling coalition. Most members of the former ruling party opposed this constitutional amendment.
