ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MP Muhammad Iqbal Afridi strongly opposed women’s attire during a meeting of a National Assembly Standing Committee.
The woman, an executive at K-Electric, was attending a meeting of the Power Sharing Committee at Parliament House.
He said he raised the issue after KE officials briefed the committee and left the chamber.
One of the agenda items of the meeting was a “comprehensive report/implementation status” of previous recommendations raised by MPs Afridi and Rafiullah regarding “electricity supply cuts, overcharging and unannounced power cuts in Karachi and Old Fata”.
After the meeting, Afridi said the attire of the KE officials was “offensive” and that they “should not have attended the meeting dressed like that.”
The PTI lawmaker also said, “SOPs should be drawn up for women’s attire as well.”
In response to a question about whether his objection was “ethically correct,” the congressman emphasized that the meeting was held at a standing committee of the National League of Congress, and that many people were present.
“What would the children say if people came like that in a respectable society?” he asked, adding that the public “learned” by watching them.
“There is no room for this kind of democracy here that is destroying society,” Afridi argued.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the committee apologized, saying the incident was extremely inappropriate.
“It has no place in our forum for someone to say something like this or be disrespectful… and even if it did happen, I would apologise,” he said.
