Initiatives to strengthen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region are expected to be finalised at the annual Quad summit in US President Joe Biden’s hometown of Wilmington tonight, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also due to attend the key global strategic event.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur hit back at Congress’ criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, saying the prime minister “represents India as the prime minister of 1.4 billion Indians”.
“Maybe the Congress establishment does not understand that during his visit to the US, PM Modi is representing India as the Prime Minister of 1.4 billion Indians. If the Congress establishment opposes PM Modi like this, India will never accept them. Rahul Gandhi should be ashamed of shaking hands with those who are against India and apologise to India,” Thakur told news agency ANI.
A senior US official told news agency IANS that the US, India, Australia and Japan will use “some of the strongest language” on North Korea and the South China Sea at the quadrilateral summit.
“The Quad agenda has always been focused on our broad strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific, which absolutely includes considerations regarding China, including economic, maritime and other aspects,” the official said, referring to China by its official name, the People’s Republic of China.
“But there will also be a focus on North Korea and several other important considerations. I think you can expect some of the strongest language in the Quad’s history in the upcoming joint statement, particularly on the South China Sea and North Korea,” the official told IANS.
The Quad summit in Delaware on Saturday is expected to announce expanded joint maritime security operations in the Indian Ocean and greater coast guard integration across the Indo-Pacific.
The leaders of the United States, Australia, India and Japan are expected to announce on Saturday the expansion of the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) initiative from Southeast Asia to the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), according to the White House.
The White House thanked India for its leadership and also said the expansion would help monitor illegal fishing and other illicit activities in waters where China has growing influence. The move comes amid rising tensions in the East and South China Seas amid increasingly aggressive Chinese military activity.
Elaborating on the IPMDA efforts, a senior Biden administration official said, “In addition to its reach, IPMDA is already providing assistance to our partners in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands to monitor their waters for illegal fishing and other illicit activities. Thanks to India’s leadership, the reach will be expanded to the Indian Ocean region.”
The Maritime Initiative, which seeks to monitor illegal activities at sea, was first announced at the China-Japan-South Korea summit in Tokyo two years ago.
