The Cincinnati Reds announced Sunday night that they have fired manager David Bell, effective immediately. Bell, 52, was hired by the team in October 2018. Bench coach Freddy Benavides will serve as interim manager for the remaining five games of the 2024 season. “David has brought much-needed stability to the clubhouse over the past few seasons,” said Nick Krall, president of baseball operations. “We felt a change was necessary to move our major league team forward. We haven’t had the success we hoped for and we need to start focusing on 2025.” Krall is scheduled to answer questions about the decision at a press conference at 11 a.m. Monday. The manager compiled a 409-456 record in six seasons with the team. The Reds are 76-81 this season. The team’s best season under Bell was 2020, their only year in which they made the playoffs. This came about because the 2020 regular season was shortened to 60 games due to COVID-19 that year. The team lost their first series to the Atlanta Braves. The team announced the decision just hours after their 0-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bell was born and raised in Cincinnati. He is a graduate of Moeller High School. Before becoming the Reds’ manager, Bell was a former MLB player who played 12 seasons. His first season was in 1995, with various teams including the Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals, and Boston Celtics. Bell played for the Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, and Philadelphia Phillies. After leaving MLB as a player in 2006, he managed a minor league team affiliated with the Reds, and then coached various MLB teams since 2012. Despite being a Cincinnati native, his 2018 management of the Reds was his first experience working for a team outside of the minor leagues.
