The ES sedan is the first car to be launched under Cherry’s Exeed Exlantix brand. Despite being on sale from 2023, the car has only been sold as a BEV. This is set to change soon with the launch of the EREV, and thanks to government regulators, we now know a lot more about the upcoming version.

The dimensions of the EREV version are identical to the all-electric version of the 2025 model year, with the vehicle (see specifications) measuring 4945 in overall length, 1978 in width, 1467 (1480) mm in height and a wheelbase of 3000 mm. Two listings have been released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, with the light version having a kerb weight of 2080 kg and the heavy version having a kerb weight of 2285 kg. Both are available with a choice of 19-inch or 20-inch wheels.

The car uses the same SQRH4J15 engine as Chery’s Kunpeng Super Performance Electric Hybrid C-DM system in the Exlantix ES, but it’s only used as a range extender, meaning the fifth-generation ACTECO 1.5TGDI engine doesn’t power the wheels. Offering up to 115 kW, the engine acts as a generator, with the actual power to the wheels coming from an electric motor. Unfortunately, the MIIT listing doesn’t provide any further information about that motor. However, we do know that the car uses a lithium iron phosphate battery and has a top speed of 180 km/h.

The Exlantix ES is built on Chery’s E0X platform, which is customised for electric vehicles and range extenders, and the options list reveals that the top-spec version will be available with a Lidar unit.

Stylistically, the EREV is almost identical to the fully electric version of the sedan. As such, it’s a fairly sleek design with a drag coefficient of Cd 0.205. The car has an electrically deployable rear spoiler and has through-style lights at both the front and rear. In China, the car is called the Exeed Sterra ES, while Exeed Exlantix ES is the export name. Additionally, we’ve noticed that, at least in the past, the export version had a more aggressive look than the domestic version.
According to reports, the range-extended version of the Exlantix will be available around the end of 2024. The EV version is currently priced at Ksh 195,900-299,900 (US$27,610-42,270), so the EREV will make the ES more affordable. Exports are unlikely to happen until 2025. Reports last month suggested a wagon version of the ES would be introduced, sparking speculation about an EREV version at the time.
