NEW DELHI: Agitated doctors have decided to call off their ‘fast to death’ strike after 16 days after meeting Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday.
The live-streamed meeting lasted more than two hours and included a discussion of several demands of doctors protesting in the RG Khar rape and murder case, including the “culture of intimidation” prevalent in state hospitals. It was done.
“Several junior doctors and medical students were suspended at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital without following proper procedures and rules. How can these students and trainee doctors be suspended just on a complaint? ?Who gave the university authorities the right to take such action?”Isn’t it a culture of intimidation to take this step without informing the state government? ‘ said the Prime Minister.
The junior doctors have been on a hunger strike for the past 17 days, demanding justice for their deceased colleagues and advocating for systemic changes to the state’s health infrastructure.
So far, six doctors have been hospitalized for health problems as part of the hunger strike.
Regarding the demand for the removal of Health Secretary Nigam, which the Prime Minister has resisted, he protested against labeling him as a suspect who promoted a “culture of threats” without concrete evidence.
“You can’t charge someone without concrete evidence. You have to provide evidence first, then you can charge someone,” she said. In response, one doctor responded, “According to the law, he may be called a defendant until he is proven guilty.”
The protesting doctors, joined by colleagues from across West Bengal, had threatened to escalate their actions by organizing a strike by all medical professionals on October 22 if their demands were not met.
They started a ‘work stoppage’ action on August 9th following the rape and murder charges of their colleagues at RG Kar Hospital, and after a ‘work stoppage’ that lasted for about 50 days in two stages, they stopped work on October 5th. It turned into a hunger strike.
