The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State has announced the removal of the name of former Governor Nyesom Wike from the Executive Block of the House of Assembly Secretariat.
This was announced in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Council, Mr. Chijoke Ifunwo, in a post shared via X on Sunday morning.
The council president also attached a video showing the moment the facility was renamed to Senator Dr. Obi Wali.
The Chairman wrote: “We have changed the name of Wike in the Obio/Akpor council administrator block and replaced it with the name of Senator Dr. Obi Wali.”
Earlier, the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Siminalai Hubara, swore in the election of chairpersons of the 23 local government councils, including Chijoke Ifunwo.
The Speaker of Parliament was sworn in earlier this month at a ceremony held at the Executive Council Room of the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The municipal elections were marked by heightened tensions amid a rift between the former governor and his successor, Governor Hubala, with strong opposition from Wike’s supporters.
Despite the difficulties, the Action People’s Party (APP) achieved victory, securing 22 of the 23 chairman positions.
The removal of Wike’s name by the Chijoke Ifunwo administration is linked to the ongoing political crisis between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Governor Hubala.

Last Tuesday, Mr. Ifunwo urged President Tinubu to remove Mr. Wike as FCT minister, accusing him of interfering in Rivers local government elections and threatening democracy.
In an interview with Arise News, Ifunwo said, “There is no need to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. Rivers State is very peaceful.”
“What we want to do is ask the President to call Nyesom Wike and give orders. Mr Nyesom Wike is threatening democracy under the presidential regime. Wike is not God, Wike is a human being. Our president should call him and give him orders.
“He has disrupted our state. When you go to other states, they are all very peaceful. Why Rivers State? Wike cannot own Rivers State, Rivers State is his It’s too big.”
“We appeal to the president to address Mr. Nyesom Wike or remove him immediately because he is not even qualified to be in the president’s cabinet,” he said.
