Disney is expected to take the top spot for the ninth time this summer, with 20th Century Studios’ “Alien: Romulus” likely to beat “Deadpool & Wolverine”‘s $18 million to $17 million fifth weekend haul. Fede Alvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” had grossed $50.6 million through Tuesday.
Sony/Wayfarer Studios’ “It Ends With Us” will become Blake Lively’s highest-grossing film at the domestic box office in the U.S., surpassing “Green Lantern” ($116.6 million) — and that’s not counting her secret cameo in “D&W.” The romantic drama, directed by and starring Justin Baldoni, is expected to gross about $13 million.
These holds take precedence over three studio-wide entries, all of which are expected to be in the single digit file counts. What about the summer over-indexing? Surely that takes precedence over what we’re seeing in our tracking? No, because we’re nearing the end of August and many schools are in reopening mode. Comscore reports that 33% of K-12 are closed and 58% of colleges are closed.
Amazon-MGM Studios is developing Blink Twice, a thriller directed by Zoe Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum, but it’s not expected to have the same kind of opening spree (double digits) as Tatum. The film has already been greenlit by MGM executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdi.

Tatum plays Slater King, a tech billionaire who meets and falls in love with cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) and invites her to his private island. But it’s no paradise, and Frida begins to question reality. Something’s not right about this place. To get out of this party alive, he must uncover the truth. Pic also stars Alia Shawkat, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Christian Slater, Kyle MacLachlan and Geena Davis. Kravitz also produced and co-wrote the film. Good news: critics are giving the film a thumbs up, with an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is picking up this shocking online marketing element on X today.
“Crow”
Lionsgate’s Larry Hollicks
Lionsgate is rebooting The Crow, starring IT and John Wick: Chapter 4 star Bill Skarsgård, but the film is expected to gross less ($6 million to $9 million) at the box office than Brandon Lee’s 1994 original, which opened at $11.7 million. Pic will be screened in 2,500 locations. Rupert Sanders is directing the film, which is based on the original graphic novel by James Oberle.
Summary: When soulmates Eric (Skarsgård) and Shelley (FKA Twigs) are haunted by the demons of her dark past and brutally murdered, Eric is given the chance to save his true love at the cost of his own life, and must journey between the worlds of the living and the dead to right the wrong and seek ruthless revenge on the killer.
The film was produced by Edward R. Pressman, Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida, John Jenks, and Samuel Hadida. The film was originally scheduled to be released on June 7th, until Bad Boys 4: Ride or Die took over its spot.
Sony is screening “The Forge,” a faith-based film directed by Alex Kendrick, in about 1,700 theaters. The film follows Isaiah, who is inspired to start making better life choices after graduating high school with no plans for his future.
