in short:
Senators Marandiri McCarthy and Jenny McAllister are set to be promoted in a federal cabinet reshuffle.
The pair will fill the vacancies left by the retirements of Linda Burnie and Brendan O’Connor.
What’s next?
The cabinet reshuffle is expected to be announced on Sunday afternoon.
Northern Territory Senator Marandiri McCarthy and New South Wales Senator Jenny McAllister are set to score major wins in the cabinet reshuffle to be announced by the Prime Minister this afternoon.
Both senators are set to be promoted, with Senator McCarthy set to succeed Linda Burnie as Minister for Indigenous Australians.
Their promotions were unopposed on the Labour left and were to fill vacancies left by the resignations of Mr Bernie and Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor.
A third vacancy on the frontbench has also been created following Permanent Secretary Carol Brown’s decision to retire to the backbench to deal with health issues.
As well as promoting Senators McCarthy and McAllister, Premier Anthony Albanese is set to make further reforms within the department.
Many in government expect both Home Secretary Claire O’Neill and Immigration Minister Andrew Giles to be moved to new posts.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has called for Giles to be fired following the release of more than 150 immigration detainees following a High Court ruling in November.
The appointment of the two ministers to their new roles will allow for a political reset of the government, but no policy or structural changes to the Home Office are expected.
It is unclear who will take on the new post.
They will still face the possibility of a High Court ruling that could lead to the release of further detainees.
Senator McCarthy was appointed Minister for Indigenous Australians following Boyce’s defeat in October’s referendum.
The new minister will join his predecessor and the premier at the annual Garma Festival in East Arnhem Land this week.
The Prime Minister is due to announce ministry reshuffles on Sunday afternoon.
